On the evening of March 24, 2019, severe thunderstorms rolled through Allen, TX, and the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. With wind gusts up to 65 mph and hailstones ranging in size from a quarter to a grapefruit, the storms broke many windows and dented countless cars and roofs. Overall damages were estimated at $300 million to $400 million.

However, one particular roof was spared from the destruction. Atlas Pro™ contractor Randy Parish, owner of Parish Roofing Solutions in Plano, TX, checked it out the day after the storms. Using his cell phone, he documented what he found and shared the video on his company’s Facebook page.

“Not one single hail hit, not one impact mark on this entire roof,” he says. “So, when people ask me, ‘Is a Class 4 shingle worth it? Is the impact-resistant shingle really that good?’ Here’s the proof.”

The only sign of damage was a box vent that Parish described as “shredded.”

The roof was installed on Dec. 4, 2018, just a little over three months before the devastating hailstorms. The homeowner, who has lived in Allen for nearly three decades, has a $4,000 deductible.

“She was nervous about the inspection because she didn’t want to hear the bad news,” Parish says. “She was ecstatic when we told her there was no damage whatsoever to her roof.”

Pleased with the results, the homeowner immediately referred Parish to her neighbors.

Innovative Technology

So why did her roof survive without a scratch when so many others needed to be repaired or replaced? Because she has Atlas StormMaster® Shake shingles made with Core4™ Enhanced Polymer Technology.

Core4 is the most innovative development in asphalt shingle manufacturing today and consists of four key features:

  • PolyCore™ Technology – Shingles with Core4 are made from enhanced virgin polymers, making them stronger and longer-lasting than other leading brands.
  • FlexCore™ Technology – While other shingles crack and tear in the cold, shingles with Core4 bend and flex with incredible elasticity. Because of their extreme pliability, the shingles exceed the industry’s standard tear strength requirement by 50 percent — even in cold-weather installations.
  • WeatherCore™ Technology – Shingles with Core4 are UL 2218 Class 4 Impact rated. They also feature the Atlas double FASTAC® adhesive sealant line, which creates a strong, thermally bonded roofing system that can withstand all weather conditions. StormMaster Shake shingles come with the highest wind warranty in the industry — up to 150 mph.
  • ThermalCore™ Technology – A roof experiences thermal shock — wide variations of heat and cold — during its lifetime. But shingles with Core4 mitigate the effects of expansion and contraction due to these temperature fluctuations, allowing for better granule adhesion.

The homeowner’s roof is an Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System, which consists of 50 squares of StormMaster Shake shingles in Weathered Wood, Summit® 60 synthetic underlayment, WeatherMaster® Ice and Water peel-and-stick underlayment, Pro-Cut® Starter shingles and Pro-Cut® Hip and Ridge shingles.

“We’ve done a lot of StormMaster installs,” Parish explains. “A lot of those homes have been hit with hail, but we haven’t seen one impact mark on any of them.”

The Durability — And Beauty — Of StormMaster

Parish is no stranger to Atlas roofing products. He says 98 percent of his sales in 2018 were Atlas.

“[No other shingles] have been as easy to install as Atlas,” he says.

The bigger HP42” shingle size saves contractors time and money on every job too, compared to competitors’ shingles.

In addition to StormMaster Shake, Atlas offers StormMaster Slate shingles, also made with Core4, but in a sleek slate look.

“When you bring in Atlas StormMaster Slate, it’s one of the most beautiful-looking roofs that we have ever installed,” Parish says. “The feedback that we get from the aesthetics of it is overwhelming. We have landed countless jobs by installing a StormMaster Slate roof in a neighborhood, and just having the neighbors see what it looks like, we’ve had people come up to us constantly just to ask us, ‘How can we get this on our house? It looks phenomenal.’”

Both StormMaster shingle styles also feature the power of Scotchgard™ Protector, which prevents the ugly black streaks caused by algae, and are HOLMES Approved.

“I think I’m gonna need one more storm to get my insurance to replace [my roof],” Parish says. “There is no question what will be going on my house: StormMaster Slate.”
