When people need a helping hand putting a roof over their heads, Habitat for Humanity is there.

Established in 1976, the global nonprofit organization and its leaders “believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities.” With affiliates located across all 50 states and in nearly 70 countries around the world, Habitat for Humanity and countless volunteers are building and improving places for families to call home.

The organization’s good work is possible thanks to its many partners — including those who donate the supplies needed to build and restore houses.

Atlas Roofing has been a proud partner of Habitat for Humanity, helping to build the Asphalt Life way, for more than 15 years. Our manufacturing plants frequently donate roofing products for Habitat projects across the country.

Over the past year, our Daingerfield, TX, plant supplied materials for three Habitat builds and repairs in the Lone Star State, which helped roof many homes for those in need.

Habitat For Humanity Of Angelina County

On June 28, 2018, Habitat for Humanity of Angelina County in Lufkin, TX, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a new beginning for a single mother and her seven children. (See photo above.) Tena McQueen says the partnership has afforded her a chance to give her kids a more stable life.

The event also included an opportunity to “sign a stud,” which encourages Habitat volunteers to bless the framework of a house by writing inspiring messages to its new owners. One of McQueen’s daughters participated in the tradition, penning “Thank you for my room.”

To aid in the project, Atlas donated 20 squares of Pinnacle® Pristine asphalt shingles, two rolls of Summit® 60 synthetic underlayment, three boxes of Pro-Cut® starter shingles and three bundles of Pro-Cut® hip and ridge shingles.

Golden Crescent Habitat For Humanity

Atlas Roofing donated a truckload of shingles and other roofing materials to Golden Crescent Habitat in Victoria, TX, to help repair and replace roofs on six homes damaged by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017.

The homeowners helped by the donation had little or no insurance.

Nola Harris, a single woman with a modest income, received only a small amount of insurance money toward the cost of replacing her roof. Jose Limon and his wife live down the street from Harris. Although their roof was quickly tarped after the storm, keeping interior damage to a minimum, the roof itself needed to be replaced. Dora Sanchez’s home required repairs to both its roof and interior. David Aguayo, who’s in his early 80s, lives on a fixed income with his wife in a house his grandfather built. In addition to not having insurance to replace their roof, the Aguayos were denied help from FEMA. Shirley and James Utesey’s leaking roof was also in need of replacement.

Thanks to the donated supplies from Atlas, Golden Crescent was able to help repair and replace these homeowners’ roofs.

Sadly, a few months after the Uteseys’ roof was replaced, Shirley died suddenly, followed by James only a few months later.

“James was a driller and worked on water wells all around Victoria and the surrounding counties,” explains Travis Fromme, project manager for the Hurricane Harvey rebuilding efforts. “He was suffering with cancer but used a voice box to tell stories of his drilling days. Their passing was sad for me, but I took pride in knowing that with all of their worries after the storm, a leaking roof was not of them, and their home was secure in their final days.”

Atlas Roofing’s donation also helped Golden Crescent repair the roof of a small home it converted into an office. Habitat workers were able to use it to continue serving others immediately after the storm without worry of additional damage caused by a leaking roof.

“Atlas was the first company to help Golden Crescent Habitat with a donation of materials,” Fromme says. “They were instrumental in getting the hurricane repair program off the ground.”

The donated roofing products consisted of 100 squares of Atlas Pinnacle® Pristine shingles in Pristine Hickory, 23 rolls of Gorilla Guard® 30 felt underlayment, 20 bundles of Pro-Cut® hip and ridge shingles and eight bundles of Pro-Cut® starter shingles.

Paris/Lamar County Habitat For Humanity

Atlas Roofing partnered with the Paris/Lamar County Habitat for Humanity in Paris, TX, to help put a roof over the heads of a single mom and her children.

In March 2018, Atlas donated 20 squares of Pinnacle® Pristine architectural shingles in Pristine Dove, three boxes of Pro-Cut® starter shingles, three bundles of Pro-Cut® hip and ridge shingles and two rolls of Summit® 60 synthetic underlayment.

Pinnacle Pristine shingles are manufactured with Scotchgard™ Protector by 3M, which guards against the ugly black streaks caused by algae, giving the family a roof that can maintain its beauty for years.
