In a world of instant gratification, homeowners often hire the first contractor that walks through their door. Without doing their homework — and because roofing license and certification requirements vary from state to state — homeowners can end up with an inexperienced contractor who doesn't do the job right.

"There's a lot of people that are learning," professional contractor and TV host Mike Holmes said during the 2019 International Roofing Expo. "That doesn't mean they're bad guys. [But] do they know enough? If they don't know enough, do you really want to hire them?"
