Historic Barn-Turned-Wedding Venue Gets New Atlas StormMaster® Slate Roof

Built in 1934, the 8,000-square-foot Historic Wakefield Barn was originally used to house nearly three dozen Guernsey milk cows owned by John Sprunt Hill. The lawyer, banker and philanthropist purchased the animals and the 2,000-acre Wakefield Farm for his farming hobby. At the time, wealthy men often created showplace farms that served as models to encourage the utilization of modern practices.
The 85-year-old barn, located in Wake Forest, NC, has been restored with great care over the years and today is used as a venue for weddings and other large events.
The Wakefield Dairy Complex — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — also includes silos, a bull barn and a calf barn, which now serves as a bridal suite and office space. All of the property’s structures retain near complete exterior integrity of their original materials and design elements.
One of the latest restorations was replacing the barn’s algae-stained roof. The job went to Raleigh-based Baker Roofing Company, which installed Atlas StormMaster® Slate shingles. (See photo above.)

“This particular roof really showcases this shingle, given the pitch and size of the structure,” says Keith Gregory, vice president of Baker’s residential division. “We are very proud to have installed this roof and certainly appreciate the value [Atlas Roofing’s] product brings to the table to restore the structure both aesthetically and functionally.”
“I am absolutely blown away by this project,” adds Stephanie Daniels, director of Southeast sales for Atlas. “It is gorgeous! We are proud to have been a part of this one.”
...The Bad And The Ugly
Although the finished project turned out great, the re-roof presented some challenges for Baker Roofing.
“This was a difficult job under extreme time constraints, with a curved roof and double silo,” Gregory explains. “The previous roofer had ‘side-lapped’ the shingles on the silo, making it look unappealing. Installing the shingles on the dome-shaped double silo was very time consuming in that every single shingle had to be custom cut and fit to accommodate the rounded dome to maintain the shingle’s intended aesthetic appeal.”
Superior Protection
The Wakefield Barn’s new Atlas StormMaster Slate shingles don’t just look good, they’re extremely durable and are designed to withstand Mother Nature’s worst. Built with Core4™ Enhanced Polymer Technology, StormMaster shingles come with a UL 2218 Class 4 Impact rating and a 130 mph Wind Limited Warranty.
StormMaster shingles also feature Scotchgard™ Protector, which prevents the ugly black streaks caused by algae, and are a HOLMES Approved Product.
With all of these attributes, the Historic Wakefield Barn is sure to look beautiful in thousands of wedding photos for years to come.
